A strong, early season storm from the Gulf of Alaska moved through the Pacific Northwest and laid down a carpet of fresh snow on Bennett Mountain outside of Mountain Home. Snow reports around southern Idaho showed:

  • Trinity Mountain: 9 inches
  • Mud Flat Road in the Owyhee's: 1 inch
  • James Creek Summit near Atlanta, Idaho: 5 inches

Stoecker Jewelers New Look
New look for Stoecker Jewelers in Mountain Home Idaho

The building occupied by Stoecker Jewelers, Hair Base Barbershop and A Little Slice of Heaven recently got a much needed fresh coat of paint. Amazing how new a paint job can improve the looks of this little section of downtown Mountain Home.

Also looks like Stoecker's is getting a new and improved website found at: http://stoeckerjewelers.com

In Mtn Home Not Only Do Pigs Fly

E-mail Print PDF
In Mountain Home Idaho, not only do pigs fly but they also lay eggs?

Pigs Eggs for sale in Mountain Home Idaho

Taken on May 10th, 2011 off Airbase Road.  And does this also suggest they have more than one pig that lays eggs?

Comments anyone?

Photo-of-week – Deer Creek and Little Canyon Creek

E-mail Print PDF

A photo at the confluence of Little Canyon Creek and Deer Creek in Idaho's Bennett Hills

Sunday, March 13th 2011: This hike was suppose to be much longer but the ground in the Bennett Hills was soft, muddy and not a good time to be off-trail. My original plan was to hike up Peak 4678 northwest of the lower portion of Deer Creek but I had to stay west of Little Canyon Creek.

Overall, this was the worst hikes I have ever taken. It was so muddy and soft I basically hopped from rock to rock the entire 2 miles. As of March 13th, 2011 I do not recommend any form of recreation off Bennett Mountain Road until it dries out.

Details of the Photo
Photo Taken: 43.128857, -115.283954 or about ½ miles off Bennett Mountain Road.
Looking: Northeast up the Deer Creek Canyon.
Date and Time: March 13th 2011 at 3:32pm or 2132 UTC.

Comments?
I'll be the first to admit I shouldn't have taken this hike. But I did my best to stay off the mud and on the rocks. It was an ankle twisting trip. Have any similar trip that you have taken? What do you think of the Photo of Deer Creek? Leave a comment.

Picture of the Week – Stormy Elmore County Rainbow

Rainbow near Bennett Mountain Idaho

On Sunday, March 6th 2011 while heading out to take my dog for a walk, I came upon this low-level rainbow with the Bennett Hills in the background. With the lack of snow in the low levels this year, winter scenery around Mountain Home has been limited to brown and more brown. So when I saw this undeveloped rainbow, I had to get a shot of it.

Photo Information
Location: 43.085603, -115.593249 or on Bennett Road near the Elmore County Landfill.
Time: 2:11 PM or 2111 UTC
Picture Aspect: 100mm digital zoom while looking northeast.

Photo of the Week – Bennett Mountain

Monday February 21st 2011 – Snowy Bennett Mountain Photo

My dog Addie and I hiked along Rattlesnake Creek in the Bennett Hills north of Mountain Home Idaho last week. With no destination in mind we walked southeast along a snow covered road. At about the 2 mile point, the road drops down a south facing canyon and the snow cover disappeared making for a very sloppy muddy hike.

Going off road and uphill seemed like the best route from that point. So we headed straight up Peak 5142. From on top of this peak, the view expanded into a 360 panorama. It was from this peak I took the above picture.

The Stats of the Hike
  • Distance: 4.0 miles
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 470 feet
  • Max Slope: 43% while hiking up south side of Peak 4152
  • Weather Conditions: Low 30's with occasional snowshowers.

Idaho Wind Mills and the Jarbidge Mountains

Photo Information:
Why Bennett Road?
This picture was taken on Monday January 17th, 2011 at 12:30PM. We had a very warm and rainy period in the Mountain Home area for the last 7 days so I was looking for a paved road to walk my dog. The Bennett Road area seemed like a good place to look for an uncrowded place to walk the dog off-lease and a place I didn't have to slog through mud.

What I Found
This sagebrush landscape was obviously extremely moist and sloppy with all dirt roads in the area covered in standing water. The Bennett Road Extension, being paved, offered me a great place to enjoy the warm and sunny weather. My dog enjoyed the road but made many trips out into the BLM and State lands on either side of the road.

There were a few times good old Addie the Plott Hound sunk pretty deep into the muck and mud but I believe she didn't mind too much. As far as traffic on this road? The beginning of this walk saw much traffic. We encountered 12 or 13 trucks within the first 15 minutes of the walk and then no vehicles in the last 1.5 hours. Overall, this area offers a pretty good place to get away from it all when the landscape is just too muddy to hike on.

Comments? Lets hear what you have to say about this Mountain Home Idaho Photo of the Day. Am I a fantastic photographer of what?

Thanks,

Sunset Over the Owyhee's Picture from Mountain Home Idaho

Walking the Dog on Canyon Creek Road as the Sun Sets over the Owyhee Mountains

Friday, January 7th, 2011: Took my dog, Addy for a walk on Canyon Creek Road north of Mountain Home, Idaho just before sunset. As I was walking south I captured this photo at 5:22PM. The photo was taken looking southeast towards the Owyhee Mountains. The Silver City Mountains are just to the right of the setting sun.

The Walk on Canyon Creek
Canyon Creek Road from Mountain Home up to the Mayfield Road intersection was dry. But getting off into the sagebrush, conditions were a little muddy with some patches of snow still hanging on. The odd dirt roads off of Canyon Creek were basically impassable on foot unless you wanted to sink into 3-6 inch of muck. I did..but didn't want to.

Hunters, Grouse and Dead Foxes
When I got out there there were a few gentlemen bird hunting so I just parked the truck and headed away from them to the south. The dog spooked a covey of grouse right in front of me scaring me and the pooch. Once the hunters left, we headed back north along the road. Good old Addy came upon a dead animal just off the road. To her credit, she just sniffed the thing until I got close. With her job done, she went back to exploring and I discovered the animal was a fox. A little further up the road I came across another carcass but this one was mostly skinless. Looks like someone or something was hunting fox in this area.

Good Place for a Walk
Overall, Canyon Creek is a pretty good place to take an over active dog for a walk. There were a fair number of people traveling on the gravel portion of this road with a couple of ranchers, hunters and a couple of ATV'ers. The views of the Bennett Hills and distant Owyhee's makes this place a much more enjoyable place to walk a dog than the local park.
