My daughter is in Mountain Home for a Christmas visit and we decided to try some sledding. On Tuesday December 22nd, 2009 we headed up Highway 20 in search of the perfect sledding hill and some sightseeing. It is becoming a tradition for us to take visitors to a turn-off above the South Fork of the Boise River downstream of the Anderson Ranch Dam. So we headed there first. The views of the canyon are pretty incredible so I figured the short walk to the canyon rim would be quick and easy. Nope!
The short 50-75 yard walk to the rim was a little more difficult with all the snow. I was surprised by the depth of the snow which was thigh deep the entire way. And once you get close to the canyon rim, you certainly don't want to get too close and risk a long fall and sure death by slipping off the cliff. Obviously we didn't.
Once back to the truck we headed down the road to the banks of the Boise River. Accompanying us was my daughters dog who has a love of swimming. Charlie the Dog enjoys swimming in the Columbia River in Washington but I never thought any dog would go in the frigid cold Boise River in December. I was wrong. Charlie enjoyed wading in the river and fetching rocks.
We never found a place to sled in the river canyon. I thought the spillway parking lot area might have some exciting places to slide. But we were not looking for a hill quite as exciting as the hillsides (cliffs really) we found in the area. On a side note, there were tracks from some "snowshoers" and this certainly looks like a nice place to explore during the winter months. The snow in this area of the river was only knee high but still a difficult walk. Maybe I need snowshoes?
