On May 24th 2010 I stopped by Marla Lawson's office in Mountain Home. Considering no Primary candidates have been visible in town I had to take the step of going to the candidate. I did not know this District 22 State Senator hopeful even had an office in Mountain Home until a few day prior to the election. Guess I don't get out much?
I walked into Marla's office on Jackson Street at about 4:20PM and was offered a chair. I sat down and had a nice but short conversation with her. Basically I got her campaign brochure information in person but did learn that she has more in common with my political views than I thought. She is Republican with a good dose of Libertarian politics in her. Overall, in the 30 minutes I spent in her office I got a pretty good feeling about Marla. But...and there is always a but, isn't there.
But Marla has an “unofficial campaign manager” and he sat in on our conversation. He seemed quite knowledgeable about everything from local to national political issues and he certainly gave me his opinions on each question I had of Marla. In a nutshell, he was one part enthusiasm, one part cheerleader, one part semi-conspiracy theorist, and one part buttinski. In short, this “unofficial campaign manager” did way more talking than “the candidate”. I was actually rude to this man hoping he would let “the candidate” speak. I left Mrs. Lawson's campaign office in Mountain Home feeling sorry for her.
Did I Vote For Marla Lawson?
The short answer is no. Why? Her “unofficial campaign manager” was the reason. I'm sure Marla is quite knowledgeable, dedicated and would make a great Idaho District 22 Senator but when a potential voter wants to talk to you one day before an election, you should be able to give me a one minute elevator speech, answer questions fully and give me a feeling you are a "take charge” type of person. I saw none of this in Marla Lawson. Quite a shame considering she might have some great ideas to make Idaho a better place to live. I'm not sure Tim Corder is the right person for the job but at least he has experience on his side.
