The Walk Out
40 or so Mountain Home Idaho High School students walked out of class on Monday February 28th, 2011 to protest the Luna Education Bills currently being debated in our State House. Good for them! I have to congratulate each and every one of these students for standing up for what they believe in. They have their rights...don't they?
Are There Consequences?
But these same students certainly realize “with these rights come consequences”. The consequences for truancy could be a 5 day school suspension or something less. Now we will have to sit back and see what the Mountain Home High School leaders decide what these consequences will be.
What Will the Consequences Be?
1. Students First!
2. Teachers First!
3. Life Lessons First!
4. Swept under the rug and ignored
5. Something in between.
Rock + Hard Place
Principal Jeff Johnson has a very tough decision to make in the coming days. What he decides to do with 40+ students who “have their rights” but illegally walked out of school will likely be watched very closely by some Mountain Home citizens.

Whatever Mr. Johnson decides, there will likely be consequences of that decision. Being too tough on these students will piss off some parents. Being too lenient will likely piss off some parent and taxpayers.
Transparently Wise?
I strongly encourage Principal Jeff Johnson make this decision wisely and with as much transparency as the law allows because the taxpayers have rights also. Some of us will be watching what you decide very closely.
