MegaLoads Along the Lochsa River

Mega Loads in Idaho

Kevin Lewis of “Idaho Rivers United” has an article in the Idaho Mountain Express newspaper about the big loads of machinery traveling along US Highway 12. He really, really doesn't like the fact these heavily laden trucks are slowly creeping along one of Idaho's coolest roads. I'm OK with Kevin stating his opinion about this subject but...

Kevin fills his written opinion with a “super-sized megaload” of hyperbole. Are these mega-loaded truck going to really have a long term effect on song birds and waterfowl? This area is home to “elk, otters and bears, wild salmon steelhead, and native trout”? Does Levin expect the people of Idaho to believe these animals will pack up and move out because of the mega-loads?

Look Kevin, you are entitled to your opinion but please...trying to tug at the heartstrings of Idahoans with the hyperbole you present in your article almost made me barf.

Future of the City of Mayfield in Elmore County

Mayfield Idaho near Maountain Home

Elmore County Planning and Zoning folks just approved a private developers plan to build a new city in the western part of county. Some citizens are quite upset about this plan and that's understandable. But I suspect the anger directed towards the county P & Z folks is misplaced.

It's my understanding that the Planning and Zoning Commission's only job is to make sure the developers follow all legal requirements to build this new town. And I guess this is a good thing...right? I certainly wouldn't want my local government to become the “Moral Compass of Elmore County Development”, would you? Wouldn't that create a new but official “Shifty 50”?

What is Tim Bondy's concerns with this Mayfield development?
- Water! Heck, we live in a desert and Mountain Home already has a water system that is in need of expensive upgrades. We (and Mayfield) will likely have problems with pumping an adequate amount of water in the near future.
- The Market! The real estate market is still in a major recession both in Mountain Home and Boise. Where are the expected 37,000 people in Mayfield going to come from?
- The Developers! Grand plans they have, but they really have no available information about these plans. Maybe once they get these grand plans published, we can see where they are going with Mayfield.

Might be a good water year for fishing, whitewater rafting and wildflower viewing this summer. Plus, the treat of big wildfire should be minimized also. Good on ya Mother Nature!
